The Intercessor

My TEA friends, you must read this book! My pastor mentioned Rees Howells Intercessor, The Story of a Life Lived for God by Norman Grubb in a sermon over a year ago. I put it on my birthday list and my daughter gave it to me for my birthday last year (Thank you, Kallie!!!). Then it sat beside my bed in the stack of books I hoped to read. Finally, this year I started reading it and couldn’t put it down for the work of God in this man’s life. You want to read this book NOW. You want to join in this amazing work of prayer witnessed in Rees Howells’ life.

Where many books climax in the middle and you “get the idea,” Intercessor climaxes in the final chapters as Mr. Howells and his praying colleagues intercede for battle upon battle of World War II and the downfall of Nazi Germany. You will be on the edge of your seat as you read, or on your face in praise and tears to God, Who alone could bring about such great victories.

What makes Intercessor so relevant now is our need for prayer in this fallen world. This year with COVID19, forest fires, hurricanes, derecho winds, and riots, God is sending us a message. God is shouting, “Turn to Me!” And in Intercessor, that’s what Rees Howells did time and again.

One hundred years ago there was an outbreak much like COVID19. Following World War I, there was a great influenza epidemic which spread over the world, causing millions of deaths. At the time, Mr. Howells and his wife were serving as missionaries in southern Africa. The Holy Spirit had led Mr. Howells to challenge death many times before, and God called him to do it again. After many of the natives died, the chief came to Mr. Howells and asked if any had died on the mission station. “No. Not one will die on the mission station,” the Holy Spirit told him to reply, “The witch doctors have failed and the ancestral spirits have failed — but our God has not failed.” (Grubb, p. 212). So the tribe members came to the mission station. Though many were sick and Mr. Howells turned the chapel into a hospital and cared for them for months, God healed them all and no one died! God had the victory!

While reading Intercessor, I’ve witnessed how the Holy Spirit is not a mailman delivering my prayers to the God. Mr. Howells shows us it’s the other way around. The Holy Spirit says the prayers and we are the vessels to deliver them to the Father. Knowing our prayers are God’s will, direct from the Holy Spirit, we don’t let the enemy cause us to doubt, for then we are like a wave tossed on the sea (James 1:6). The Holy Spirit tells us for whom to intercede, and in obedience we lift these prayers to the Lord until victory is won.

Today’s TEA CUPP: Find a copy of Rees Howells Intercessor today. Use his model of prayer in your own life. Let the Holy Spirit show you how to pray and win every battle on your knees. We can do this because both the Spirit (Romans 8:26) and Jesus (Romans 8:24) are making intercession for us. Our country needs your prayers, dear friend. Keep praying for the USA.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 (NKJV)

P.S. Please keep praying for THE GREAT REVIVAL, the last great revival before Jesus’ return, where many new hearts are brought into His Kingdom to welcome His coming. Book of the Month: The Maker’s Diet

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Matthew 9:35 (NKJV)

This month I begin a new feature, a book of the month, where I share with you what I’ve been reading beyond my usual Bible time with Jesus.

The Maker’s Diet by Jordan S. Rubin (Siloam, 2004) came to me highly recommended by a prayer warrior and dear friend who has endured health problems in the past. When my friend followed The Maker’s Diet plan, God healed her! The Maker’s Diet is NOT a fad diet to lose weight, it IS a way-of-life with the blessing of good health.

Dr. Jordan Rubin tells the drastic story of his own failing health and search for healing, before finally discovering the diet laid out by God in the Old Testament for the Israelites. This Old Testament diet saved his life. Dr. Rubin shares testimonies from others whom God has healed using this plan, including Dr. Rubin’s own grandma!

If you like scientific facts, Dr. Rubin has those here for you, too. Research upon research, documenting what works and what doesn’t in our diets. My own ideas were shattered as I read Dr. Rubin’s criticism of the vegetarian diet, my favorite for almost 40 years.

In a nut shell (did you know you should soak nuts?), this book gives you the evidence and the plan to put your body on the road to healing, so you are strong and healthy for serving Jesus. The conclusion includes recipes, resources, and a 40-day plan to health — something a person could do between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

If you’ve prayed for healing or if your health has given you troubles in any way…tummy aches, head aches, joint paint, digestion problems, skin rashes…you name it…you need to read this book and decide for yourself that God’s diet plan He gave His chosen people is also the best diet for all people. This is could be God’s answer to your prayers.

So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. Exodus 23:25 (NKJV)

Hungering for God’s Word

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 5:4 (NKJV)

Can you imagine truly hungering for God’s Word so much that you would fast (not eat) for weeks and months to get your very own Bible? If you are like me, you have a collection of Bibles on your bookshelf from different times in your life…the one I was given in church as a third grader, the ones my children received, my first One Year Bible, and more. There they sit because we have newer study Bibles we have come to love. So, it is hard to imagine begging God week after week to send a Bible. But that is how the amazing story of Brother Yun begins in The Heavenly Man.

My dear Bible study leader Terry has recommended this book on several occasions, so finally I made it my goal to read it this summer. Just a few pages into the book I’m already in awe of what God did in the life of The Heavenly Man. Brother Yun became a Christian as a teenager when Jesus miraculously healed his dad of cancer. This all came about while Bibles were banned in China. Christians buried their Bibles in tin cans to save them for when God’s Word would be allowed again. Brother Yun wanted a Bible so much, he prayed and fasted for months. Finally in the wee hours before dawn, a Bible was delivered to his door, just as he had dreamed. Brother Yun ate up the Word of God like a starving soul, memorizing entire books of the Bible. Wow!

How many people have Bibles sitting on the shelf as we do that are never opened? Is there someone in the world that is praying right now for a Bible to be delivered? Are we as hungry as Brother Yun for God’s Word, gobbling it up every day as our very life and nourishment?

Today’s TEA CUPP: God has given us a gift, the Bible, His Word. Do not neglect this precious present from the Lord. Sit down with Jesus every day for TEA and eat His Word, the bread of life. Underline your favorite verses. Memorize them. Use God’s Word as conversation starters as you pour out your heart to Jesus in prayer. Commit to reading your Bible every day. And if you are one without a Bible, please message me and I will send you one from my shelf!

More Good Books

Calling all readers! Winter isn’t over yet and you still have some long evenings by the fireplace to fill. Often it’s hard to find just the right title to uplift, inspire and encourage you in your walk with the Lord. I always appreciate a book recommended by a friend. So today I share with you some more good books to pass those dark nights. Pull up a chair, a good book, a cup of tea or cocoa, and be blessed.

In His Steps

This was likely the fifth time I read In His Steps. There is something compelling about a story that makes one return to it again and again for inspiration. Written in the late 1800s as a sermon series, this provoking novel about a church in Kansas, gave birth to the popular expressions, WWJD?, What Would Jesus Do? A small group from the church heeded the pastor’s call to ask this question before embarking on any endeavor. You will find yourself wrapped up in the lives of a railroad tycoon, a singer, a newspaper editor and others who are seeking God’s path. The results were amazing and spread all the way to Chicago and the world. You will want this to be the next book on your “to read” list.

Rebel With A Cause

How this book ended up on my bookshelf is a story in itself. A few years back we decided to remove ourselves from all junk mail and email lists, sending companies unsubscribe notices. In response to my departure from the Samaritan’s Purse list, Franklin Graham sent me a free copy of his book, Rebel With A Cause. Such a nice hardback book I couldn’t just toss, so I put it on my bookshelf. Five years later, when searching for something to read, I pulled it down and read the first page. I was instantly wrapped up in the life of the eldest son of the great http://your-pharmacies.com evangelist Billy Graham, his salvation story, and how he came to lead the godly relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse. You will be inspired to live out God’s call for your life as you read how Jesus helped Franklin Graham.

Just As I Am

Having enjoyed Franklin Graham’s autobiography so much, I searched for more titles at my local library. I was delighted to find a copy of Just As I Am by Billy Graham. This book is a bit weightier than the other two titles, literally and figuratively. The 760 page autobiography is a heavy one to put in your airline carry-on bag, but the tales of Rev. Graham’s crusades from Los Angeles to Australia to Russia (behind the Iron Curtain) to the ends of the earth, will encourage you to follow whatever God’s call is for your life. From his roots as a dairy farmer in North Carolina to his role as pastor to presidents, no one can deny that Rev. Graham lived a life worthy of the calling with which he was called. And as I write this short review, I believe the dear pastor is ninety-nine years old and still talking with Jesus from North Carolina.

Finally, book-lovers, if these are not enough titles for you, I recommend a social media book group, Goodreads.com, where you can share and find more Christian books to inspire. Kisses from Katie

We are forever changed. All whose lives have been touched by Katie Davis in Uganda, and all who read her book here in the USA, will never be the same. We can’t return to our “normal” lives, without realizing how much more God has for us. I invite you to be changed forever, too, as you read Katie’s incredible story.

This blessing came to me at my Wednesday Bible study where the women are passing around a book entitled Kisses from Katie. The ladies say they can’t put it down. It’s finally my turn to read it, and they are right. As I keep telling myself, “just one more chapter,” Katie is adopting “just one more child,” sharing the love of Jesus with the people of Uganda.

Katie, an American teenager from Nashville, Tennessee, president of her senior class and homecoming queen, gives up everything to follow Jesus’ call to care for the orphans. Over and over, Katie relates how she is just a normal person, who says “Yes” to God’s call. Completely honest and transparent, Katie shares the joys and trials of her new found ministry.

Learning to be a mother and run a non-profit at the age of 19 has quite the learning curve, as Katie shares her experiences. From rats and cockroaches, to HIV and scabies, to caring for the worst poverty, one might think that God gave Katie super-human powers. But as Katie relates (p. 135)…

“I believe that God totally, absolutely, intentionally gives us more than we can handle. Because this is when we surrender to Him and He takes over, proving Himself by doing the impossible in our lives.”

Along with her engaging narrative, Katie shares Bible heroes from David to Jonah to Paul. She writes how God met their needs, and He is caring for her and her adorable children, too. Katie has a thorough grasp of scriptures and the truth, which is also the name of her ministry, Amazima. Above all, Katie lives out the truth of the Gospel every minute of every day, pouring out God’s love, exhausted or not, (“with a little bit of coffee and a whole lot of Jesus”).

Everyone should read this book — moms, dads, teenagers, homeschoolers, college students, Bible scholars, youth leaders, grandparents, the average Joe. Your heart will be broken for these dear people in Uganda and around the world, who need the unconditional love of Jesus. Kisses from Katie will inspire, challenge and encourage us all to do more for God’s kingdom, more than we ever imagined. Yes, we are forever changed.

Your Ticket to Heaven

God gave me this Bible verse the morning after I finished Don Piper’s book 90 Minutes in Heaven. Somehow I missed reading this book in the decade since it was published, but I’m thankful to finally have been immersed in Pastor Piper’s story.

1 Peter 5:10-11 describes Piper’s experience well…

First, he was called to eternal glory in heaven, following a terrible car accident.

Second, he was sent back to earth to suffer quite a while!

Third, through all his healing and continuing in ministry, God has perfected, established, strengthened and settled Don Piper. To God be the glory forever and ever!

This is a true story you won’t want to miss reading. It has also recently been made into a movie, but I vote for the book to avoid the gruesome scenes from the accident and medical world.

What impresses this reader most is Pastor Piper’s emphasis on prayer. The book’s dedication to his prayer warriors says, “You prayed. I’m here,” the same four words he spoke his first day back at church. It was the prayers of a passing minister who climbed into his crushed automobile to pray for a dead man that brought him back to earth. It was the prayers of his family, friends, congregation and complete strangers who pulled him through the worst pain and healing of his life. And it is prayer today that helps him continue in ministry, reaching out to others who are hurting. Certainly, this is an inspiration for all to keep praying!

Another blessing from 90 Minutes in Heaven are the beautiful descriptions of heaven. These word illustrations cause us to understand why Piper wanted to go back, and burn in us a desire to be there, as well. The first people who greeted him in heaven were his grandfather and a childhood friend who had led him to Jesus. The people kept coming; Piper describes it as “the greatest family reunion of all.” Then there was the music, the singing of thousands and millions of angels, harmonizing both old and new hymns. And just as Piper was enjoying this amazing chorus, he was called back to earth, singing “What a Friend we have in Jesus” with the praying pastor in his mangled vehicle. That’s when they realized he was still alive.

I especially value how each chapter of 90 Minutes from Heaven begins with a Bible verse, making God’s Word the focus. God’s Word is where we find our story and healing and hope for the future. The Bible is also where we find the truth about heaven and how to get there. If I could add one chapter to Piper’s book, it would be entitled, “Your ticket to heaven,” describing for readers how to make sure they also will be in heaven. And so, dear friend, I offer you a ticket to heaven today:

Today’s TEA CUPP: If you want a glimpse of heaven and the power of prayer, I highly recommend Don Piper’s book, 90 Minutes in Heaven. If you desire more than a glimpse and want to spend eternity in heaven (Yes, you do! You don’t want the alternative!), please read these Bible verses and pray to Jesus today. Welcome to heaven, my friend!

Jesus is the Ticket:

For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13 (NKJV)

Keep reading your Bible and seeking Jesus each day:

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18 (NKJV)

Celebrate the promise of heaven!:

In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:2-3 (NKJV)

When You Don’t See His Plan

My new year began with the most wonderful book I “just happened” to find in my mailbox. I love how there are no accidents with God, just God-incidents. He knew I needed to read this biography, so He mailed it to me! If you’ve ever had things go wrong in your life (and who hasn’t?), you will love this book, too!

When You Don’t See His Plan is the touching and inspiring story of Nadine Hennesy, missionary to Kosovo. What makes her story unlike others was the tragic death of her husband after only 11 months of marriage. It seemed their dreams of missionary work in Peru were over, as Nadine gave birth to their daughter without her husband Ed.

But Nadine did not give up. She started teaching again, served the Lord a year in Peru with her daughter Lydia, then was called to an orphanage in Albania, and finally is directing a school in Kosovo. Nadine is a regular American girl who put herself in God’s hands, allowing Him to use her wherever needed. Just imagine the number of lives Jesus has touched through her!

I immediately felt drawn to Nadine, as she and author Rebecca Baker shared her story. Nadine shows us all how to trust Jesus through the hardest situations, and come through praising Him. What a joy to count her as a sister in faith who I will meet in heaven someday.

Heaven is for Real

I just read the most wonderful page-turner called “Heaven is for Real” by Todd Burpo. Friends have been telling me for months I need to read this book, and finally I borrowed a copy from my dear neighbor Marie.

This true story describes the journey of an almost four-year old boy who goes to heaven while undergoing a late surgery for appendicitis. In the months following the surgery the boy, Colton, shares his heavenly experience with his parents.

Things I love about this book:

The description of Jesus in the throne room with God. When I pray to Jesus, I have a vague picture of Jesus in my mind. Because Colton went to heaven for three minutes during his appendicitis surgery, I now have an image of the throne room of God. Colton tells his parents all about the rainbow colors of heaven and how Jesus sits at the right hand of His Dad. On the left side sits the angel Gabriel. Colton even meets John the Baptist and God the Holy Spirit who is sort of “blue.” I now have this picture in my mind as I have my TEA CUPP prayer time with Jesus each morning.

When Pastor Todd (Colton’s dad) is ranting at God in the hospital, asking God “is this how you treat your pastors?!!!” Todd had just endured a year of testing with three major attacks on his own health. Now was God going to take his son? No! Jesus showed Todd’s son the wonders of heaven and sent Colton back to earth in answer to Todd’s prayer. Wow! I love that we can be real with God and share our deepest hurts. How many times did I ask God, “Is this how you treat your church camp managers?” when fires and flooding and financial troubles engulfed us. The Lord loves us so much that He hears and answers our prayers, despite our anger and doubts.

The promise that our unborn babies are waiting for us in heaven. In one chapter we learn that Colton has two sisters, his older sister Cassie on earth and another sister he met in heaven. This heavenly sister was miscarried at just two months gestation, but Colton’s parents had never told him about her. They didn’t even know she was a girl! What hope this gives me with the three babies we have lost. They are all waiting for me in heaven.

Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God Colored markers, drawing paper, my Bible and my TEA CUPP…what am I up to today? Doodle TEA!

Today I share with you a book that has blessed my prayer time. Recently I read “Praying in Color” by Sybil MacBeth. Just as My TEA CUPP Prayers offer you a new flavor of prayer, MacBeth gives us a refreshing splash of color as she shares her prayer method with the world. And I love it!

MacBeth, a math teacher by profession, has taken the God-given gifts of color for spending time each day in prayer with Jesus. Using artful language, such as “the stadium-seating of the 48 crayons in the Crayola box,” Macbeth draws me into her prayer world. She challenges us, saying it is okay to be childlike and to spend “almost every day coloring pictures with Jesus.”

Just as I set aside time and space for My Tea Cupp Prayers, MacBeth prepares a spot for her “Praying in Color.” She collects her drawing paper and markers and invites the Holy Spirit to join her. I thought I would try out MacBeth’s prayer method along with My TEA CUPP Prayers one day, and found it to be an inspiring change of pace.

I had already journaled my THANKS verse and prayers, so I started doodling with the EXALT section. My EXALT verse that day was…

To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. Jude 1:25 (NIV)

So in my prayer journal, in a sunburst doodle, I wrote God’s attributes from this verse (glory, majesty, power, etc.) as rays coming out from a center of EXALT. I pondered His glory as I colored in the sunburst, praying for God to be glorified that day.

For my ADMIT section, my verse was…

“Where is your faith?” He asked His disciples. Luke 8:25 (NIV)

The perfect verse for me, since I’m so strong on prayer, but continue to worry. I drew a cross and “nailed” my sins to it with blob words like “doubts,” “worries,” “losing heart,” etc. I asked Jesus to wash it all away and make me new and full of His Holy Spirit.

My CALL section began with the verse…

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. Ephesians 5:1-2 (NKJV)

I drew my five-finger plate, and each thing God calls me to do on a finger. In the palm I drew a big heart, asking God to help me do each activity with love. Such a visual display of my prayers, were images I could carry with me throughout the day.

Skipping ahead to my PETITION prayers…doodling gives me so many new ways to journal my prayers of intercession for others. My PETITION verse that day was…

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:9 (NIV)

I drew a big cross for Jesus, and wrote the names of all my family around it, that no one could separate us. The next day I had even more fun praying and doodling, writing my family members inside hearts, with their prayer needs around the hearts. For those in need of jobs and homes, I drew a house and wrote all their names inside. For those in need of healing and comfort, I drew a big hand labeled “God” and wrote all their names in the palm of His hand. And when the prayer requests came by email that day from our church, instead of being overwhelmed by the half-dozen emails, I doodled-prayed their names.
