And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:8 (NKJV)
Does it seem to you that every year Easter becomes even more meaningful than the previous year? Every year there is another loved one in heaven, every year there is another reason to hope because a loved one is sick, every year the world gets to be less like our home and we long for that heavenly home Jesus is preparing.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 (NKJV)
One of my favorite ways to begin my quiet time with Jesus, along with reading a devotion, is to read an old hymn. Awhile ago I came across two great old hymns. Check out these wonderful lyrics:
May I be willing, Lord to bear daily my cross for Thee;
Even Thy cup of grief to share, Thou hast borne all for me.
Lest I forget Gethsemane; lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me, Lead me to Calvary!
(Hussey, King of My Life, 1921)
As we all struggle with the current world situation, with cancer, with coronavirus, with loss of loved ones, let us remember the Cross and all Jesus bore for us there. This Holy Week remember that Jesus still bears our sins and carries our burdens. And we can rest in the shadow of His Cross.
I take, O cross, thy shadow For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self my only shame, My glory all the cross. Amen.
(Clephane, My Glory all the Cross, 1872)
Today’s TEA CUPP: As you prepare your heart for Easter, ponder the old hymns that remind you of Jesus sacrifice on the Cross. Then praise His Name with Christ the Lord is Risen Today (Wesley, 1739)
But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Galatians 6:14 (NKJV)
