You are digging into God’s Word, praying for Him to show you what you should do, and yet, you still aren’t sure what to do. Does this sound familiar? Why is it sometimes difficult to discern God’s CALL? Why doesn’t God just speak to us from a burning bush as He did for Moses?
I was reading in my Bible about Moses and the burning bush recently. I remember the first time I heard this story at Sunday school when I was young. At lunch after church my dad questioned me about my morning. I told him we studied Moses and the burning bush.
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. Exodus 3:1-2 (NIV)
My dad didn’t let me get away with just that answer, he started asking for details on the story. One question he asked was, “Who was in the burning bush?” I remember not wanting to answer, because the answer was “God” and I thought it was bad to say His name (I didn’t realize then it was only wrong to say His name in vain). So, I finally whispered “God” and my dad must have decided I’d been listening to the Sunday school story for he ended his query.
Spring ahead in time a few decades, I was hearing the same Bible story again, this time at a seminary where I was attending a conference. The pastor explained to us that when God said His name is “I AM,” it was like a breath, the breath of Life. Take a big breath, then exhale. As you exhale, say “I AM.” Now imagine God saying His name like this and the Word thunders, vibrating the mountains. It makes me tremble to imagine.
Wouldn’t it be great if God still spoke to us through burning bushes? Though perhaps I couldn’t handle such a powerful exchange. We’d really know it was God talking and really listen to what He tells us! We’d go right where He sends us and do just what we are supposed to do, if there was a burning bush. Or would we???
Do you remember the story of Lazarus and the Rich Man in Luke 16? The rich man in hell begs Abraham to send Lazarus to him with some water, but Abraham says no. Then the rich man pleads with Abraham to send Lazarus to his brothers to warn them, and Abraham replies…
‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” Luke 16:31 (NIV)
God says the same thing now…we have our Bibles, His Word, and even if He appeared in a burning bush today, we wouldn’t listen.
Today’s TEA CUPP: O Jesus, help me to listen and hear Your Voice as I read Your Word. May Your Word be like a Burning Bush to me, claiming my complete attention, causing me to take off my shoes and exalt You, for I am on Holy Ground when I am in Your Word. Help me to clearly hear the CALL You have for me today and for the future. And give me strength and courage to do Your will. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
