“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:18 (NKJV)
I like to underline God’s PROMISES in my Bible as I read His Word. One day I was underlining verses and realized, “Hey, this is a promise and it isn’t a very pleasant one!!” So I started a list of what I call “Not Positive Promises,” the word “positive” meaning uplifting, though these promises are all positively true.
Just look at the verse above from John 3. Basically it says, if you don’t believe in Jesus you are condemned already. Ouch! That is a harsh statement. But it is one of God’s promises right from His Word.
Some more “Not Positive Promises” that are positively true include…
“Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Mark 10:15 (NKJV) & Luke 18:17 (NKJV)
“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:16 (NKJV)
“And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” Luke 3:9 (NKJV)
“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38 (NKJV) & Luke 9:26 (NKJV)
For every not uplifting promise, God has another promise for those who believe in His name. For example, the flip-side of this promise just above is found in Luke 12.
“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God.” Luke 12:8 (NKJV)
Jesus definitely gives us hope! Though most of God’s PROMISES I underline, write down, and claim as my own make me feel warm and loved on the inside, it is important to remember that God has other promises, too. I need to remember these “Not Positive Promises” so that I stay on His straight and narrow path, and encourage others to follow Jesus with me.
