On my bed I remember You;
I think of You through the watches of the night. Psalm 63:6 (NIV)
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble getting back to sleep? That can be so frustrating, especially if you have a big day planned the next day. I want to suggest that perhaps the Lord has a reason for keeping us awake, He wants us to pray! You don’t even have to get up as you have your TEA CUPP right there on your bed with Jesus. Who knows, you might even change history!
In Esther 6, the king couldn’t sleep either…
That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. Esther 6:1 (NIV)
This was like us reading our Bible or a diary when we are awake at night. What the king learned was he had failed to honor a man who had saved his life. So, the very next day he honored Mordecai. This act was just another step in God’s plan to save His people. The whole book of Esther is really an exciting drama you might like to read the next time you can’t sleep! Perhaps, like the king, God will remind you of someone in the night, too, and the next day you will give her a call or send an encouraging letter.
After reading God’s Word, my sleepytime TEA begins by praying for friends who also have trouble sleeping at night. I ask God to give them rest. Then I start down through my prayer list, praying for all the names I can remember. If I’m awake for a long time, I might pray through all the parts of My TEA CUPP Prayers (Thanks, Exalt, Admit, Call, Understand, Promises, Petitions). Usually, sometime in the middle of this praying, God lets me fall back to sleep again. I wake up and it is morning and time for my usual TEA CUPP time with Jesus.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 (NIV)
