For He will command His angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 (NIV)
Have you noticed how God’s promises often come at just the right time? So often I worry about safety when traveling, and God comforts me with His promises.
A few years ago we were about to take a trip to California for a camping conference. The day before our departure there was a big snowstorm outside. As the snow flurried around our windows and we packed our suitcases, I worried about the mountain passes we needed to cross to get to California. And Jesus said to me that day in Matthew 14:27 (NIV) “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
The next day, as we began our journey along the icy interstate, I was reading my One Year Bible. The story in Genesis 46 was about Jacob’s journey with his family to Egypt to see Joseph and find relief from the famine. I imagine Jacob was worried about safety and what lay ahead, just as I was.
God knew Jacob was worried and called to him (verses 2-4)…“Jacob, Jacob!”
“Here I am,” Jacob replied.
“I am God, the God of your father,” He said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.”
What comfort those words must have brought to Jacob. And what comfort they brought to me, knowing God was also with us on our winter journey.
The road was packed with snow from the day before. As we drove over the mountain passes and freezing rain began to pelt the windshield, I claimed God’s promise to Jacob for my family…“And I will go down to (California) with you, and I will surely bring you back again.”
Thank you, Jesus, for Your traveling promises.
