And finally, the last letter of My TEA CUPP prayers, the second “P” is for Petition or Pouring out my heart to God.
Psalm 62:8 (NIV) says, “Trust in the Lord at all times, O people, pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” And so I pour out my heart to Him with His Word. This is what most of us often do when we pray, we ask God about anything. Here’s the time to lift up family and friends, our pastors and church, our nation and world.
1 Samuel 12:23 (NIV) says, “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you…” Have you ever told someone you would pray for them and then forgot?? In this verse Samuel calls that sin. We are to pray for each other. If we fail to pray and things work out, we can’t share in God’s victory. If we fail to pray and things don’t work out, we must share in God’s disappointment.
Let’s always be ready to share in God’s victories by praying for each other. But how can we remember? I keep a list. I have a book mark in my Bible. On it are names of people I want to pray for every day. Then I have other lists for each day of the week.
I use one of my petition verses to pray for each person on my list. For example, Psalm 17:8 (NIV) “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings.” Then I might substitute my family into the verse so it says, “Keep Kent as the apple of your eye, hide Kallie in the shadow of Your wings.”
As you read your Bible, underline verses that you can use to petition and pour out your heart to God. The answers you receive will amaze you.
