So you’ve just been shown your sin in God’s Word, or by a sermon at church, or perhaps by a loving friend. Now you know about this sin, what are you going to do with it? How can you admit it to God? How can you get started in confessing to the Lord? Guess what, God gives us the words to say right in His Word.
Since all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, all of our favorite Bible stories are made up of sinners. In His Word God records many of their confessions as they admitted their sins and asked God’s forgiveness. We can use the same prayers for ourselves.
“Do not be angry beyond measure, O LORD;
do not remember our sins forever.
Oh, look upon us, we pray,
for we are all your people.” Isaiah 64:9 (NIV)
“Although our sins testify against us,
O LORD, do something for the sake of your name.
For our backsliding is great;
we have sinned against you.” Jeremiah 14:7 (NIV)
“Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Matthew 8:2 (NIV)
“Into Your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.” Psalm 31:5 (NIV)
“Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.” Luke 11:4 (NIV)
“God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Luke 18:13 (NIV)
“Help us, O God our Savior,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
for your name’s sake.” Psalm 79:9 (NIV)
“Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.” Psalm 51:1-2 (NIV) – all of Psalm 51 is great!
As you read your Bible, underline verses you can use for admitting your sins to God. Remember, Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He washes them all away and makes us white as snow. Tomorrow I’ll share those verses that assure us of God’s forgiveness.
Have a blessed day.
